Chapter 12

Roxy

“We’re here,” I announce, hoping to rouse some sort of social awareness from Logan, who spent literally every minute of the journey here, deep in thought, ignoring me. I guess I shouldn’t really be salty about it, considering I was a grade A bitch to him earlier, but I at least expected him to acknowledge that I’m trying to make amends. Even if I haven’t come out right and said it, that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. It should be obvious but he’s so out of it, I’m actually a tad worried for his sanity.

I’d ask him, if I thought he’d share whatever it is that is going on in his head, but knowing Logan, he’d either brush it off, and just flat out refuse. Neither would help our situation, so I chose to fill the awkwardness between us by singing.

That is, until we pull up in one of the seediest looking neighborhoods I’ve ever seen.

The houses are dilapidated, while the surrounding garden and driveways don’t fare much better. From the only house on the street that emits any sort of light, a group of guys spill out from the wooden porch, rowdy and drunkenly as they leave, heading down the street.

I’m not one to normally judge a book by its cover, but my instincts race on high alert, seeing how they’re dressed and how they behave. Fuck knows how Paige has landed herself here, but the earlier panic that I could see in Logan’s eyes, is now reflected in my own. Logan must realize that my strength is wavering as he finally moves, and gestures towards the still raging party.

“Come on, let’s go get my baby sister.” His words are full of conviction and I’ve no doubt that he’d summon the devil, if it meant saving Paige. I follow his footsteps, trying to stay as close to him as I can, without looking like a complete weirdo.

As soon as we get closer, I hear the distinct tones of a rap song playing, along with a chorus of partygoers singing along to it – not very well I might add. The foul stench of sweat and alcohol hits us when we enter through the wide-open front door, that I actually find I have to screw my nose up to stop a sick feeling from rising.

Logan stops in the hallway, appraising the scene before us, although even with his height, I’m not sure he can see much. To our left, a makeshift bar has obviously been erected out of multiple kegs stacked on top of one another, with an interior door laid flat between them. Red solo cups and shot glasses are full to the brim with God only knows what. The guy manning it, immediately gives me a once over that is both disturbing and terrifying, then offers me a drink, sending shivers down my spine. Not only is he probably drunk and high, he’s also way too old to be hanging around at a high school party voluntarily.
