Chapter Sixteen

“What’s up with you today, boss? You know, you haven’t yelled at me once for calling you ‘boss.’”

“Don’t push it.” But Finn cracked a smile. “I’m in a good mood, that’s all.”

“All right, I’ll bite. Why?”

“Keystone got three feet of fresh powder with yesterday’s storm. The mountains are calling.”

Toni cocked her head. “You’re telling me the only reason you’re happy is ’cause it’s almost ski season? Bullshit.”

“I happen to love skiing.” Although not nearly as much as she’d loved her evening with Amelia. She’d been walking on clouds since and not even a long day on the job could change her mood. She couldn’t stop thinking of how Amelia felt under her. How her kiss tasted like pecan pie and how her hands had been intent on mapping every inch of her. Amelia really wanted her—there was no doubting that now. When Finn closed her eyes, she could see Amelia going down on her and it was an image she didn’t want to let go of anytime soon.

“Okay, now you’re really weirding me out, boss. You’re sitting over there smiling like you’ve smoked too much weed and I know you’re not into that. What the hell is it? And don’t tell me it’s the snow.”

Finn chuckled. “I can be happy about the snow.”

“Spill.”

“Amelia and I may have done more than eat pie last night.” She felt sheepish admitting it, but Toni would get the story out of her eventually anyway.

“No shit! You two got it on? Hot damn.” Toni held up her hand for a high five, laughing as Finn gave her a side-eye. “I knew it was gonna happen sooner or later. How was it?”

“Good—and that’s all I’m gonna say.”

“I’ll take that.” Toni thumped Finn’s shoulder. “Right on, boss.”

Even as Finn tried to act mature about the whole thing, Toni’s excitement and her dimpled smile carried her along. She’d slept with Amelia. It was no dream. And as much as she’d enjoyed the fantasy of it happening, the real thing was even better.

“Did you already call her today to check in?”

“I thought about it, but I didn’t want to bother her. Besides, it’s not like what we did was a big deal or—”

“Stop right there. You have to check in. You like her and you don’t want to mess this up. And don’t try arguing with me because you know I’m right.” Toni reached for Finn’s phone on the center console and held it out. “You’ve been thinking about her all day. Let her know that.”

Finn looked at her phone. She’d been wanting to talk to Amelia since the moment she woke up. “She’s not going to think it’s weird?”

“You are weird. She might as well get used to it.”

“Whatever.” But Finn pulled up Amelia’s number. Then she hesitated. “We only have an hour left on our shift. Maybe I should wait. I could call her instead.”

“You know how that last hour goes. We could be done in an hour or we could get stuck working another three. You might forget about her.
