FIFTY-THREE

ATLANTIC OCEAN – October 1893

EDWARD HAD MADE his way to the docks in time to get a last-minute seat in steerage and board the SS City of New York. The ship, which weighed seventeen thousand tons and was nearly six hundred feet in length, was one of the first express liners to use twin screws and boasted a top speed of over twenty knots. As he’d looked toward the receding docks of Southampton, Edward wanted every one of those knots to move him nearer to Mary.

He’d planned to spend as much time as possible on deck to avoid the claustrophobic conditions in steerage, but the sea had a heavy swell as they cast off, and the weather hadn’t gotten any better as they journeyed across the Atlantic. After ten days of rough seas, they ran into a storm approaching the Gulf of Mexico. Silver veins of lightning laced the dark skies overhead, and the liner needed all its power to keep on course through the mountainous waves surrounding it. Edward, long ago forced to abandon his plans to stay on deck, had to endure the hot and fetid conditions below, surrounded by the wailing of children and the moaning of the seasick. He soon learned that the captain had decided it was too dangerous to head directly to New Orleans and was planning an alternative route.

Edward cursed his bad luck. Ever since the day he had watched the Elysian disappear into the fog, he’d been dreaming of this moment.
