CHAPTER SEVEN

Chrissy drove to work with a smile on her face in spite of her stomach churning up a mini-tornado. First thing, she intended going to see Mr. Wallace, the store manager, to apprise him of the situation with Ray. Her chat with Melody and Nicole had given her the strength to jot down some notes to help make sense of a few things.

She parked in the staff car park then got out of the car and reached into the backseat for her bag. When she stood upright to shut the door, she bumped into Ray, who was standing directly behind her.

“Hello, Ray. Did you have a good weekend?” she asked, hoping her voice would be calm and tremor free. She shuffled around him, determined not to show her anxiety. He blocked her way when she tried to lock her car door. Taking a step back, she smiled. “If you wouldn’t mind moving, I’m running late and need to lock the car.”

He glanced at his watch and tutted. “Oh, what lies we tell. Still, nothing surprises me where you’re concerned.”

“I’ve obviously upset you in some way, Ray, and I’m sorry about that. However, harassing me isn’t going to make things right, is it?”

His head lolled backwards, and he laughed. “Harassing you? You think that’s what this is? You ain’t seen nothing yet, lady.”

Chrissy was tempted to leave the car unlocked and run into work, but she thought it would only give him the impression that he’d won. She folded her arms and waited. She looked over her shoulder, praying that another colleague would show up for work and put an end to her awful predicament. Still, the minutes ticked by, until another car finally drew up alongside them, and Leslie, the girl from the canteen, got out of the car to greet them.

Her questioning glance fell on Chrissy first. “Morning, both of you. Everything all right?”

“Sure. We’re just having a natter before going into work. Aren’t we, Chrissy?” he said, his eyes never leaving Chrissy’s face.

With her eyes fixed on Leslie, sending the young woman a silent plea for help, Chrissy nodded. Then she looked at her watch. “Gosh, is that the time? We’re going to be late. Oops, excuse me, Ray. I need to lock my door.”

Ray grudgingly stepped aside a few inches, just enough for Chrissy to insert the key in the lock of her old banger. If she’d had a new car with automatic locks, she wouldn’t have found herself in such strife. With the car locked, Chrissy took the opportunity to link arms with Leslie, catching her just a bit off guard. They walked across the car park and through the staff entrance at the rear of the building.

“Thanks for saving me,” Chrissy said out of the corner of her mouth.

“What was going on back there? I knew something wasn’t right the second I drew up. Is he hassling you, Chrissy?”

“Yeah, I’m just going to see the boss about it now. He’s giving me the creeps, Leslie.
