He crossed the remaining space between he and the husky with a noticeable limp, and it was hard, despite all I'd ever had against the man, not to feel some pity for him in that moment.
“Do you think I like being made a mockery of, Wickham?” Connall growled. “Do you think I honestly enjoyed spending these last three years, chasing our tails, accomplishing nothing? Do you think I enjoy being in these piss-water settlements, on the edge of civilization, surrounded by lessers and degenerates?” He gestured at the women in the room at that, and I saw more than a few hackles raise.
“Then why accept the mission?” Grant pointed out. “You were a senior officer. You could have turned it down—”
“My seniority is why I couldn't turn it down!” Connall snapped. “I got into this line of work for reasons you could never appreciate, boy. I serve because I love my country! I've never cared about rank, I've never cared about doing something grandiose with my life. We aren't trying to be heroes here. We aren't protectors, we are civil servants who do whatever is necessary for the good of our nation! And if sometimes that involves putting the overall mission over a few innocent lives, we do that, because we must.”
“That isn't what I signed on for!” Grant insisted.
“That's because you're ignorant,” the pit bull growled, flatly. “You haven't any broader perspective on our work. And it's not even your bloody fault. You're uneducated, boy. You're simple. I thought at the very least you'd listen to me, and this would all work out. But you were stubborn. You were obstinate. You didn't listen. And you're not listening, even now.”
Grant's ears had fallen back, and he looked torn somewhere between doubt and anger. “I'm not…” he stammered, but the words fell off, like he wasn't really certain what to say. I was about to jump to his defense, spitting angry, when the husky spoke again. “Is this because of where I grew up?” He demanded, suddenly.
