On the way to school I stop and knock on the library door. Gracie is already in there, setting up for the day. She lets me in and leaves me alone. I sit down on the floor by the picture books with the red D cushion and flick through, remembering lots that I used to love. Some of them are still the same editions, I can tell by the marks on the pages. There hasn’t been any proper money going into this library for ages.

Then I get up and go over to the 9-12 shelves and pick off a book I’ve only read once before. The Mixed-Up Files Of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler. I read it years ago and I don’t remember much about it except that it’s about running away, but it was funny. Funny is good.
