Chapter X
The weather was mild the day Jules headed to the Russellâs mansion. The month of January could be a bit fickle but most always it was cold with snow. This year, though, had turned out to be wet but rather mild as to the temperature. He didnât have a full day of travel and was able to bear up with hot bricks, an extra rug, and his greatcoat along with his top hat and gloves. The roads were fairly dry ensuring fast travel, and they arrived a little past midday.
Gareth spotted his coach from an upper window and met Jules at the front door with an extended hand.
âGreetings, my friend. Did you have a good trip?â
Brookton grabbed Garethâs hand and even gave him a slap on the back. âYes, believe it or not, the trip was fast and mostly comfortable, but we only made a brief stop at the Horse and Rider Inn for a hot drink and food that we carried with us. I was in a hurry to get here.â Truth to tell, Jules was bored to tears in London and the diversion of Foxâs family would bring him out of where he was, in the doldrums.
As the two men walked into the house followed by footmen with Brooktonâs trunks, Gareth chuckled and commented on best-laid plans. âSome of my relatives have already departed as they were impatient to get home or had business to attend to. I especially wanted you to meet my cousins. Warren and Timothy are twins and just finished at Cambridge last year and only recently returned from their Grand Tour. However, they are off again with their brother Richard, this time to France on business for their father. And one of my brothers, Robert, and his wife, Natalie, returned home as I have a new nephew, and they had begun to miss their son.â
âAh, congratulations. So, you are an uncle now.â Jules looked at him closely and inquired, âAre you becoming domesticated? Where is the ring in your nose?â
With a raised eyebrow, Gareth declared, âMake that proud uncle, Jules. And, yes, Iâll accept a new nephew any day.â
His friend just chuckled. âI see you still canât take much teasing, can you?â Jules stopped at the look in Foxdownâs eyes, and he wondered what he was plotting.
âWould you like some tea after you refresh yourself or would you prefer to grab a foil in our training room?â
The eyes of both men lit up as they contemplated a heated competition. Jules and Gareth both were avid fencers when in Town, and each looked forward to besting the other. âEr, you had wanted me to meet your family?â
âAt the moment, all are busy or enjoying the milder weather. We can keep each other entertained until time for tea, and I will introduce everyone then.â Turning to the butler, he said, âRushing, this is Lord Brookton. You have a room ready for him. Would you escort him and see that hot water and brandy are available
