Ross dropped Vic off and assured him that he would park the borrowed motor pool sedan in his garage, making it difficult for anyone to sabotage it overnight. He even waited until Vic got to the door and headed inside, a bit of friendly protectiveness that Vic appreciated.
Simon had a pizza from their favorite take-out ready on the table, along with two beers. âI thought you might want a drink,â he said. âAnd I didnât think either of us felt like cooking.â
Vic pulled Simon into his arms and gave him a long, lingering kiss. âI donât care, as long as youâre safe.â
Simon returned the kiss with gentle passion. âIâm fine butâ¦I saw Rossâs car on the news, in the median. It looked like it had been hit with a truck. So, Iâm the one whoâs really glad youâre home in one pieceâespecially after your texts. Want to explain whatâs going on?â
Vic took a half step back, and let out a long breath. âWe think Nateâs been behind everythingâthe bike wreck, the accident today, all the other weird stuff. He escaped, and I thought they caught him, but apparently not. And instead of finding himself a nice hacienda in Mexico, heâs apparently here, trying to burn down my life before he kills me.â
âFuck.â
âYeah. I talked to Dad, which is how I found out Nate didnât get recaptured. So, we spent the rest of the afternoon trying to trace him. No luck yet.â
Simon leaned in and kissed him. âWeâll deal with it. Come on and eat before the pizza gets cold. We can worry about Nate later.â
Over pizza and a few beers, Simon told Vic about his day digging into the haunted paintingâs history, and the tragic story of Maria and David.
âIâm going to talk to Gabriella in the morning. Sheâs working on a way to break the magic and set them free.â
âAny chance that Davidâs spirit is going to have a score to settle with Maria? Because I wouldnât want to be in the middle of a ghost smackdown.â
Simon grimaced. âHeâd have a right to be angry. Weâll ward for it, just in case. But I think he might just be relieved to be free. And as for Maria, what happens to her after this is out of my hands.â
Vic listened with concern when Simon told him about the premonition. âYouâre alright? Did the headache get better?â Vic asked, looking at Simon worriedly.
âDid you miss what I said, about seeing you covered in blood?â Simon stared at him. âYouâre the one whoâs in danger.â
âYou said yourself that you couldnât get any clues from the image. Maybe itâs a general warning, instead of a specific thing thatâs going to happen,â Vic said. âAnd your instincts are right on the money, because with Nate on the loose, weâre both in danger.â
âSpeaking of which, Pete thinks thereâs a strange guy casing the shop. No idea whether itâs Nate or just some oddball, but it might be worth having a uniform make a couple of extra passes during the day,â Simon told him.
