Ross dropped Vic off and assured him that he would park the borrowed motor pool sedan in his garage, making it difficult for anyone to sabotage it overnight. He even waited until Vic got to the door and headed inside, a bit of friendly protectiveness that Vic appreciated.

Simon had a pizza from their favorite take-out ready on the table, along with two beers. “I thought you might want a drink,” he said. “And I didn’t think either of us felt like cooking.”

Vic pulled Simon into his arms and gave him a long, lingering kiss. “I don’t care, as long as you’re safe.”

Simon returned the kiss with gentle passion. “I’m fine but…I saw Ross’s car on the news, in the median. It looked like it had been hit with a truck. So, I’m the one who’s really glad you’re home in one piece—especially after your texts. Want to explain what’s going on?”

Vic took a half step back, and let out a long breath. “We think Nate’s been behind everything—the bike wreck, the accident today, all the other weird stuff. He escaped, and I thought they caught him, but apparently not. And instead of finding himself a nice hacienda in Mexico, he’s apparently here, trying to burn down my life before he kills me.”

“Fuck.”

“Yeah. I talked to Dad, which is how I found out Nate didn’t get recaptured. So, we spent the rest of the afternoon trying to trace him. No luck yet.”

Simon leaned in and kissed him. “We’ll deal with it. Come on and eat before the pizza gets cold. We can worry about Nate later.”

Over pizza and a few beers, Simon told Vic about his day digging into the haunted painting’s history, and the tragic story of Maria and David.

“I’m going to talk to Gabriella in the morning. She’s working on a way to break the magic and set them free.”

“Any chance that David’s spirit is going to have a score to settle with Maria? Because I wouldn’t want to be in the middle of a ghost smackdown.”

Simon grimaced. “He’d have a right to be angry. We’ll ward for it, just in case. But I think he might just be relieved to be free. And as for Maria, what happens to her after this is out of my hands.”

Vic listened with concern when Simon told him about the premonition. “You’re alright? Did the headache get better?” Vic asked, looking at Simon worriedly.

“Did you miss what I said, about seeing you covered in blood?” Simon stared at him. “You’re the one who’s in danger.”

“You said yourself that you couldn’t get any clues from the image. Maybe it’s a general warning, instead of a specific thing that’s going to happen,” Vic said. “And your instincts are right on the money, because with Nate on the loose, we’re both in danger.”

“Speaking of which, Pete thinks there’s a strange guy casing the shop. No idea whether it’s Nate or just some oddball, but it might be worth having a uniform make a couple of extra passes during the day,” Simon told him.
