Chapter 18
No one objected when Silvia gave Longarm his holstered Colt and shell belt. Longarm felt a little better once he had buckled on the gun. He supposed that Mendoza figured he and Silvia werenât a real threat, even armed, as outnumbered as they were.
Claudio led the way down the street to a cantina. The group entered the thick-walled adobe building, and while the other bandidos went to the bar and shouted for tequila and mescal and cerveza, Claudio steered Longarm and Silvia toward one of the rough-hewn tables scattered around the hard-packed dirt floor. Mendoza went with them.
âSit down, my friends,â Claudio said in his booming voice. âWe will drink.â
Longarm was beginning to understand that Claudio must be Mendozaâs second in command. Otherwise he would not give orders so easily. For the moment, Mendoza was willing to allow his segundo to take the lead. That could change any time, though, Longarm reminded himself.
A short, stocky man whose mustachioed face was covered with nervous sweat stood behind the bar. He was probably the owner of this cantina, Longarm decided. Two women were also behind the bar, one of them middle-aged with thickening hips and large, pendulous breasts, the other younger, slimmer, with a distinct resemblance that told Longarm she was the older womanâs daughter. The sweating man and the younger woman began pouring drinks for the outlaws, while the older woman came out from behind the bar and crossed the room to the table where Longarm, Silvia, Mendoza, and Claudio were sitting. Claudio lowered the hand he had used to signal for drinks.
âI thought Luz would serve us,â Claudio said with a frown, referring to the younger woman, Longarm guessed.
âShe is busy, as you can see,â the older woman replied. âI will bring you whatever you would like.â
Claudio reached up and cupped one of the womanâs heavy breasts through the thin cotton of the blouse she wore. His thumb plucked at the large, dark nipple that was visible through the cloth.
âBring us a bottle of tequila,â Claudio ordered. The woman stood there stolidly while he continued to fondle her for a moment. Then, when he let go of her breast, she turned toward the bar. Claudio reached out to swat her across her ample bottom and laughed. âBedding this one would be like slipping into an old, comfortable shoe.â
Longarm glanced over at Silvia and saw that her eyes were downcast. She stared impassively at the table. He wished she didnât have to endure the indignity of being forced to listen to Claudioâs crude comments, but they both knew she would have been going through much worse right about now if Longarm had not managed to kill Emilio.
âTell me about your brother,â Mendoza said, taking Longarm a little by surprise.
Longarm nodded. âJackâs younger than me and has blond hair. Heâs a good-looking young fella.â
âWhat was he doing on this side of the border?â
âProspecting,â said Longarm, sticking to the story.
Mendoza nodded. âThere is gold to be found in the mountains. Not enough
