Chapter 20
Thanks to an old leghorn rooster, Longarm woke up before dawn with a fresh morning hard-on. This inspired Glory to get on top and beg him not to leave. As she served him breakfast in bed, an hour later, he told her heâd be back, explaining that he had no better place to stay, heâd be stuck in those parts until he could get a federal warrant he could show the local circuit judge in exchange for Rick Robles, and he wanted her to introduce him to some of their unofficial Indian neighbors.
He said, âIâve verified the late Bobby Valdez had a Mex pal called Duke. But if their Indian pal called el Aguilar has been spending much time in town Iâve yet to meet anyone who noticed. So unless heâs got a day job at some nearby spread, under a more natural sounding name, he could be holed up with some of your holed-up Utes who never moved west with the others.â
Glory said she didnât know how many Ho-speaking natives of the west slope might still be around and added that they didnât seem to be out to give anyone any trouble.
He told her that was his whole point, explaining, âLots of ornery local boys blend in with harmless local folk who neither bust the law nor help it out worth spit Thereâs Frank and Jesse over Clay County way and Tiburcio Vasquez was playing checkers with other Mexicans in the Plaza De Los Angeles when he wasnât stopping coaches over on the Santa Monica post road. But weâll talk about Ute hold-outs gone bad once I make sure nobody hangs his Mex pal, Robles.â
Glory had told him her kid brothers slept two dog-runs away and for a gal who liked to come she hadnât yelled too loud about it. So Longarm thought nothing of it, at first, when Ward, Junior came out to watch him saddle up the borrowed paint in their lean-to stable. He told the kid he was riding in to see about that hanging and Ward, Junior said, âI know. Me and Wayne wanted to watch but Glory wonât let us. Itâs a good thing for you our Pop wasnât here last night whilst you were fucking Glory. Pop never held with anyone even trying to fuck Glory whilst he had anything to say about it.â
Not wanting to confirm nor deny the kidâs accusation, Longarm told Ward, Junior he never did anything a galâs father might not approve of. He said, âThe hangman Iâm about to meet up with in town told me not to fuck his daughter and I said right out Iâd never.â
The Otis kid snickered and said, âOh, her? Joy Norwich would fuck most anybody if they werenât afraid of her father. He sells shotgun shell and dynamite in his hardware store when he ainât hanging folk!â
Longarm led the jug-headed cowpony outside and mounted up before the sassy kid could steer the conversation back to his own dadâs views on gentleman callers.
