Chapter 12
Like many gals whoâd kept their teen-aged figures well into their thirties, Ruth Fenton was built more firmly than a lot of her milk-fed customers and, as Longarm had certainly enjoyed learning for himself, nine out of ten widow women whoâd been happily married up with a man theyâd admired gave a hell of a better ride than many a divorcee whoâd never been able to get along with the shiftless skunk whoâd broken her in and taught her the little she knew about the subject.
They were going at it dog-style, the best position for combining conversation with sexual congress, by the time Ruth told him why sheâd been so sure somebody was trying to put her out of business. She said sheâd had her help dump the whole shipment from that one farm after pouring a dead rat head first from a delivery can into one of her glass bottles.
Gripping her firmly but gently by her trim hip bones as he stood with his bare feet planted widely on the rug beside his bed, Longarm said, âRats do manage to drown themselves, scampering around a dairy barn in the dark, and the way I understand it, none of those mystery riders have ever boarded a milk car with or without a dead rat handy.â
She arched her slender waist to reply, âOoooh, more to the right and are you saying itâs impossible Iâm the one theyâre after, then?â
Shifting his approach to the angle she indicated Longarm told her, âSo far the big loser has been the railroad. Youâve made a modest profit on milk deliveries you whittled the price down on. The farmers you paid less passed their losses on to the AT&SFRR local division and they in turn passed their losses on to their insurance underwriters.â
He let that sink in for a couple more thrusts and added, âAfter that we ainât talking about the national debt. Regular train robbers would have taken more off just the passengers of a serious cross-country train than those bozos have ridden off with after stopping the morning milk train four times. The figures are easy to add up because so far theyâve yet to demand the brakemanâs swell railroad watch! Letâs turn over soâs I can kiss you some more, now.â
They did and lost track of the thread of the conversation for a time as she caught up on what she said she hadnât been indulging in for quite some time.
Gals always said that. But it seemed logical a woman running her own business in a manâs world would have to be careful, next to a lawman with a tumbleweed job, who she got in bed with. He knew a mighty lusty Texas gal with over a hundred healthy young hands on her payroll and she swore sheâd never even danced with one of âem.
You could ask a man to bust a bronc or steam clean a dairy or you could ask a man to get on top and do you right. You had a time finding a man as willing to put his heart and soul into both chores for the same gal.
