So the tall paulownia addressed the smaller tree:

“I have been very foolish. I’m sorry. I apologize. Let’s try not to fight anymore. We are brothers, we should love one another.”

The smaller paulownia paid no attention, despite the fact that the tall paulownia had genuinely apologized and begged forgiveness. It still hated the tall paulownia.

But the tall paulownia no longer hated the small paulownia. Even if the smaller tree went on hating it, even sometimes reaching out and breaking its branches, or destroying the nests of the birds, it restrained itself and said nothing.

The taller paulownia soon began to grow again after it had decided to love the smaller tree.

On seeing the paulownia that had stopped growing begin to grow again, the boy’s joy knew no bounds. At every opportunity he visited the taller tree, hugging it and stroking it.

The small paulownia only hated the taller tree more intensely. The days were not long enough as it kept thinking about how it could harm the tall paulownia. When summer thunderstorms rumbled, it would grumble wishes that it might be struck by lightning and be killed.

Time passed. The boy became an old man and finally died.

The villagers cut down the smaller paulownia tree to make a coffin to bury the old man. The smaller tree became a coffin and rotted away in the ground together with the body. Then the tall paulownia was also cut down and became a lovely geomungo zither played by the boy’s son.

Still today, the geomungo soothes our poor breasts with its sad but clear music.
