02 The track continues to climb through grass and then tussock for another 30 minutes until you reach the Bushline Hut. Content yourself with the knowledge that this is the halfway mark, and the hardest part lies behind you. The hut has sleeping swabs, a log fire, long-drop toilets and drinkable water.

03 Continue through the forest behind the hut and then zigzag up to the ridge, where the views embrace the Travers River valley. A slip zone to the right of the track demonstrates the risks during snow, high winds or heavy rains. After 1.5km, you’ll reach a ‘T’ intersection where the Robert Ridge Route heads left. Instead, turn right onto the Pinchgut Track.

04 Shortly past the junction you’ll reach a single-room shelter where there’s water but nothing else. The track heads downhill and, after about 10 minutes, you’ll find a park bench, perfectly positioned for romantic views over the lake.

05 The track then plunges back under the bushline and descends steeply through a moss-lined forest; in summer, it’s deliciously cool. There’s one more exposed section through the bracken and low mānuka (tea tree) bushes before you’re enveloped by the lofty canopy of the beech forest. After around an hour, you’ll reach the upper Mt Robert Car Park. Follow the road for 600m to complete the loop.
