Chapter Ten

Sebastian

“Everything was delicious.” Evan stood up, gathering my plate with his.

After our emotional conversation, we switched gears, enjoying our food and having traditional-date chat.

“You don’t have to clean up.” I stood, reaching out for the dishes. “You’re my guest.”

“True.” He pulled the plates closer to himself. “But also, I kind of do.”

“How’s that?” I reached for the butter dish and salad dressing. He might be all demanding on clearing the table, but the least I could do was put away the refrigerated items.

“Don’t you remember?”

I looked at him, waiting for him to fill in the rest because I hadn’t a clue.

“You cook, I clean. It’s the rule.”

I’d forgotten about that completely. Whoever cooked got to sit back and relax after the meal. “I suppose I should have been messier,” I teased.

“Ha ha.” Evan eyed the dressing, and I set it back down. He was serious. “Did you want dessert now, or did you want to wait?”

“Which dessert are we talking about?” After that kiss, all I could think about was him in my mouth, his hands balled in fists at his side as he tried not to take over. That was the best—when he was so turned on, it was almost too much—knowing I did that.

“Probably the cannolis.” He let out a small sigh.

He was right. We’d had a pleasant dinner, getting caught up with all the things in our lives. Except for the ones we needed to talk about. We’d kept the conversation strictly date-like. We talked about his employees. I described my bosses. He mentioned how he was considering getting a kitten. I told him how I was thinking about buying a new recliner. Just the average, everyday things.

But now it was time to discuss the important things—to dig a little deeper.

Ruth had more than one presentation about how important it was to negotiate. And I never doubted that. But it wasn’t until Evan came back into my life I saw how truly important that was.

We would figure things out—we were both all in. It was just a matter of what it would look like.

He took the plates into the kitchen, and I got up and grabbed my folder.

Yes, I had a folder—one that was probably going to earn me a little giggle from Evan. Goodness, I’d chuckled at myself for creating it. But it was important to remember all the things in it and, when I was close to him, my brain tended to focus on his smile or the tilt of his head instead of the things I needed to say.

When I got back to the table, he already had it completely cleared. I set the folder in front of me and waited for him to return.

Sure enough, he broke out into laughter.

“Will there be a test on this evening’s presentation?” he teased, holding his hand out for me. “Let’s go into the living room—unless you plan for me to take notes.”

“No test or notes today. I made you copies.” I sat on the couch. “Although it sort of feels like a test for both of us,” I confessed.
