Chapter 13

Sophia

A shiver runs through me as I disconnect from Logan, but that was too much, too intense. His feelings and mine folded together like a woven basket until I couldn’t distinguish them from each other.

Now that we’re apart, I start to get a sense of self back but with a new addition. An energy force is crashing through me like water released from a dam. It’s like a constant buzz vibrating through my whole body. It’s overwhelming. My breathing comes in quick pants and my vision tunnels as my head grows hot.

“Sophia, Sophia, are you ok? Just breathe.” Logan’s voice is hollow and quiet as if he’s far away. He reaches for my hand, and I jerk away. My nerves are raw, exposed. I don’t think I can handle his touch right now. This is enough to disperse the light-headedness, and my breathing settles back into an easy rhythm.

“I’m ok. Just need a minute.” I lay my head on the arm of the couch and take a few deep, calming breaths, focusing on the air as it floods my lungs, filling them with life.

When I finally get my regular senses back under control, I’m able to feel the new energy buzzing inside me, but it’s no longer violent. It’s calmed to a low vibration.

“I can feel it. The magic. My magic.” That is pretty freaking awesome and terrifying at the same time.

Logan’s face is etched with relief.

“That’s a great first step. Now comes the hard part. Learning how to harness it with precision and purpose. That’s one of my dad’s favorite sayings: Precision and Purpose.” Logan drops his voice a register.

“What are your parents like?” I’m curious to know more about Logan and where he came from, and I need a minute to gather myself back together before we try any more magic. My senses are heightened, and I need a distraction. The reds, blacks, and golds of book spines, Logan’s sea-blue eyes. All the colors are a little too bright.

“Well, my mom is a Psyche, so we could never get away with anything around her. She’s softer on us than my dad but strong. Comes from a very old Mage family so she’s got lots of pull in the community and with the council. My Dad is tougher, he’ll push us to learn and isn’t afraid to let us fail so we can learn from our mistakes. He’s been training us ever since we were kids, although we have some outside teachers, too. His family has always been mostly warriors. Always defending against Mages gone bad, protecting the secrecy of the magic world, and various other monsters.”

“When you say various other monsters….” I trail off, kind of reluctant to pursue this line of questioning. Do I even want to know what else is out there? I shudder and my hand drifts to my neck when the thought of the Ferrebat’s teeth sinking into my neck intrudes.

“I wouldn’t even know where to start. There’s definitely a book for that.
