Spring is migration season for many birds as they leave their wintering grounds and head for their summer breeding grounds. It’s not just songbirds that make these long flights, either: shorebirds, raptors, waterfowl, and many others may fly hundreds or even thousands of miles on this vernal journey. (The single longest migration is the arctic tern, which flies back and forth from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic every year!)

Perhaps you’ve seen groups of birds flying overhead as spring unfolds! Geese and other waterfowl are especially easy to notice, as they may make a lot of noise while they wing their way across the sky. Their cries and songs are a sign to me that spring is on its way, and I use that as one of my main focuses to celebrate the turning of the season.

Migration Mobile

One way to capture the energy and excitement of this time is by creating a migration mobile. A mobile is a hanging piece of art in which multiple decorative pieces are balanced in mid-air, usually by hanging from strings from a main support or several secondary supports. This migration mobile features cutouts of birds suspended from threads.
