Chapter 29

Barry

Barry left work so enraged he almost forgot his wallet. Where was Franny? What had she done with his money? He stopped by the police station to see if they had any updates on his case. He thought about his first visit when he filed the missing person’s report. A case, that’s what they called it. This was not an incident of a missing person. It was a theft. They refused to see it that way.

The young officer told him when he first went down to the station, “Sir, the money was also in your wife’s name. We’ll file it as a missing person since she’s been gone for over a week.”

“Missing person my ass,” Barry snorted. “She up and stole my money and sneaked off in the middle of the night. You flunkies better find her soon, and I mean yesterday.”

The officer grimaced with tight lips. “Yes, Mr. Blackman. We’ll do our best.” That day, Barry stomped out of the police station. He would never give up. Never.

Today he entered intending to play the devastated husband, miserable over the loss of his wife. Maybe this would get better results. “Hi, Doll. I’m Barry Blackman, and I filed a missing person’s report a few weeks ago about my wife, Franny.” The woman at the desk was a looker. She had blonde hair and a pert figure, accentuated by her tight uniform. Barry moved closer to check her left hand for a wedding ring.

“Sir, I’ll get Officer Wilson to review the case and give you an update.”

“What time are you finished here? We could grab a beer.”

She ignored him and picked up the telephone.

Oh well. He tried. Barry looked around the room. It was almost empty.

“Why don’t you sit down and wait in a chair over there?” She pointed to a bank of gray plastic chairs. “Officer Wilson will be right out.”

Barry sat in a chair and concentrated on his sad husband’s story. He wanted to get it right.

“I’m Officer Wilson. Can I help you?” A large woman stood in front of him. She had short, cropped gray hair and wore a police uniform with buttons bursting at the seams. A stern expression on her face added to her no-nonsense demeanor.

She must weigh over 200 pounds. Just like Franny. Barry unintentionally scowled and cleared his throat. “I’m still looking for my wife, Franny Blackman. She’s been gone a long time, and you found her car in Trenton with no sign of her.”

“I checked the updates from the report, and we have no new information.”

Barry forced tears. “You’ve just got to find her. I’m getting desperate.”

Officer Wilson hiked up her tight black polyester uniform pants and moved closer. Barry shrank back in his chair. “We’re doing our best, sir.”

Barry lost it. “No, you’re not doing your best. You’re all incompetent morons. This is your job. The fat cow stole money and took off. For all I know, she’s in Vegas, gambling my money away. You need to find her right now!” he shouted.
