The first sign that something was wrong came one day when Frank bent over and felt a stab of pain in his lower back. Over-the-counter ointment, heat, and a massage from his wife, Mae, helped Frank feel better. But unknown to himself or anyone else at the time, osteoporosis—a destructive bone disorder—was wearing away bits of his spine.

One day, Frank was getting up from a chair when pain hit him harder than ever. An x-ray showed that he had suffered a compression fracture in his lower spine. The pain was unbearable. Frank rated it a ten on a pain scale of one to ten. He received oxycodone with acetaminophen, percocet, and steroid injection for the intense pain. The relief, however, was only temporary.

In the months that followed, Frank’s pain increased substantially. Emergency room visits, steroid injections, and prescribed combinations of morphine sulfate, MS contim, oxycodone with acetaminophen, tylox, propoxiphene, and darvocet moderately relieved his pain, but Frank’s discomfort was constant.

“The pain medication would wear off fast, and I could only give him a dose every four hours,” said Mae, remembering the suffering her husband went through. “It was terrible for us to see him in so much pain and not be able to help.”

After minimal pain relief from oxycodone hydrochloride controlled-release tablets, oxycontin, hydromophone, dilauded, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, TENS, and anesthesiologist specializing in pain management told Frank about Medtronic Advanced Pain Therapy Intrathecal. The therapy had been successful with other patients with chronic pain. Frank was interested.

Two weeks after a successful screening test, Frank underwent surgery to begin APT Intrathecal. He experienced no complications, and went home the day following the procedure.

Frank’s pain decreased about 50% at first, and continued to decline over the following months. He now rates his pain as only one to two on a ten point scale. “The pain is nearly gone for me,” Frank said.

Frank had experienced no side effects from the therapy. With APT Intrathecal, pain no longer controls Frank’s life.

“This pump made all the difference in the world for me,” Frank said. “I had pain on and off for a long time, and sometimes it was terrible. Now, it doesn’t bother me at all. As far as my back is concerned, I feel as good as ever.”
