Chapter 31

My stomach let out an audible growl and I clapped my hand over it.

Holt smirked and amended, “After lunch.”

I turned back to Stemp. “Can you stay here at Sirius? It’ll be safer for you, and we’ll want you to interview Weiss some more in your George Harrison disguise. We can bring you back a sandwich from the Melted Spoon.”

“Very well,” Stemp agreed.

“Nope,” Holt countered.

I turned a frown on him. “Why not?”

“I’ll bring back sandwiches,” Holt corrected. “Not we. Remember, you’re personally responsible for Stemp. If he’s staying here, you’re staying, too.”

I huffed out a short breath. “Right. Thanks. We’ll go up to my office and wait for you there. I’ll call Spider and get his team digging up everything they can find about Maria Harchman. She’s probably still in the Edmonton Institution. And I’ll get a guard to transfer Weiss to a cell and get him some lunch, too.”

Holt nodded, and we headed for the time-delay chamber. After we emerged into the lobby, he split off to the front door while Stemp and I climbed the stairs.

As we strode down the corridor, Stemp asked quietly, “What did Holt mean when he said you were personally responsible for me?”

“No big deal. Just Dermott being his usual self.”

Stemp’s voice developed a chilly edge. “I deduce that you told Dermott you required my input, and instead of taking responsibility for the decision, he intends to blame you if anything goes wrong.”

I shrugged. “Same old, same old.” As we entered my office I motioned him to the sofa. “Have a seat. I’ll make those calls.”

My first call was to Security. Assured that Weiss would be transferred to a cell and fed, I hung up and dialled Spider’s extension.

He picked up, sounding glum. “Hi, Aydan. I guess you got my message.”

Uh-oh.

I swallowed the sudden dryness in my throat. “No, I just got back to my office. I haven’t checked my voicemail yet. What’s wrong?”

His sigh carried clearly over the line. “The RCMP found Eldon Rice Swift, a.k.a. Arthur Ronald Walters.”

“I’m not going to like this, am I?”

“No. He’s dead. Shot.”

“Oh.” I spared a moment for some silent profanity, then refocused. “Okay, go hard after Farrell Metz, then. Whatever facial modifications you did to find Swift, do the same on Metz. Feed both his current appearance and the modified parameters into the facial recognition search. Did anybody get the make and model of his car when he picked Swift up?”

“No, but it doesn’t matter. The car was stolen. The killer abandoned it in a residential area in Drumheller with Swift’s body still belted into the passenger’s seat.”

“Fuck! These guys are one step ahead of us the whole way!”

“I’m sorry…” Spider began, but I interrupted.

“You don’t need to apologize; you and your team are doing a great job as usual. Keep me posted on anything you find out about Metz. And… I’m sorry, I know how busy you are; but we also need as much information as your team can get us on Maria Harchman. Last
