Little Shaq gripped Ms. Terpenny’s clipboard and stared out at his classmates. He couldn’t speak!

Ms. Terpenny nodded for him to begin. Little Shaq gulped then read the first name on the list: Douglas Alvarez. No one responded, and Little Shaq felt his cheeks get hot.

Doug was sitting at his desk, chatting with his neighbor.

Little Shaq checked his name off the list and tried the next person, but this time he spoke too fast.

“You need to speak slowly and loudly,” said Ms. Terpenny.

Little Shaq nodded okay. After a few more minutes, he finished the list, but he wasn’t looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

Later that afternoon, it was time for Little Shaq to pass out the snacks.

“Go get ’em,” said Rosa.

“Yeah,” said Barry. “By the way, I’ll have the pretzels and save me an apple juice too.”

Walter laughed and gave Little Shaq a thumbs-up.

Little Shaq picked up the snack basket and started at the back of the room. The first few rows were really easy. Something was finally going right!
