Chapter 11

The next day, the morning sun filters through the curtains as Bianca and I stand before our parents, a metal bat each gripped tightly in our hands. The clock on the wall ticks ominously, counting down the moments until everything changes.

"Mom, Dad, please," I plead, my voice strained. "You have to believe us. The System is coming, and we need to be prepared."

Mom shakes her head, her eyes glistening. "Luke, Bianca, this has gone on long enough. Put those bats down and-"

But before she can even finish, her words are cut off as a blinding light envelops me. The living room shifts, twists, and suddenly I'm no longer there. The familiar surroundings vanish, replaced by an alien landscape. Trees with huge purple leaves tower overhead, and the air filled with the smell of ozone and something... else. Something wild and dangerous.

I blink, disoriented, and look around. Dozens of confused people materialize around me, their expressions a mix of terror and bewilderment. My heart sinks as I realize, as expected, Bianca and my parents are nowhere to be seen.

Before anyone can speak, a massive holographic screen appears in the air before us:

WELCOME TO THE SYSTEM.

PLANET EARTH, DESIGNATED AS NUMBER 643,214 IS NOW UNDER THE DOMAIN OF THE SYSTEM. ALL OF HUMANITY SHALL BE SUBJECTED TO A TOTAL OF 100 SCENARIOS TO DETERMINE THEIR WORTH.

ENDURE AND ASCEND. THE SOLE CONTESTER WITH THE HIGHEST SCORE SHALL BE AWARDED THE ULTIMATE BOON - A SINGLE WISH FULFILLED UPON THE CONCLUSION OF THE FINAL CHALLENGE.

FAIL AND FACE ANNIHILATION.

Gasps and cries of disbelief ripple through the crowd. Some fall to their knees, while others start shouting questions at the impassive screen. I grip my bat tighter, a grim sense of déjà vu washing over me.

Then another screen materializes:

SCENARIO 1: HUNTING GOBLINS.

TIME LIMIT: 3 HOURS

EACH GOBLIN KILLED WILL GIVE 1 POINT.

5 TOTAL POINTS ARE REQUIRED TO PASS THIS TRIAL.

DEATH AWAITS THOSE WHO FAIL TO ACQUIRE 5 POINTS IN THE ALLOCATED TIME.

As the screens slowly fade away, panic sets in among the group. People start running in different directions, screaming for help or calling out for their lost loved ones. But I know better. I've been here before, and this time, I'm ready.

"Everyone, listen up!" I shout, my voice cutting through the chaos. "We need to stick together. Those goblins are real, and they're dangerous. If you have anything you can use as a weapon, grab it now!"

A few people turn to me, their eyes wide with fear and confusion. A middle-aged man in a business suit steps forward. "Kid, what are you talking about? This has to be some kind of sick joke or-"

His words are cut short by a blood-curdling shriek from the nearby underbrush. A small, grotesque figure bursts forth - green skin, razor-sharp claws, and teeth like needles. A goblin, just as I remembered.

Time seems to slow as the creature lunges towards the businessman. Without thinking, I spring into action. Four months of intense training kick in, and I feel my body respond with a speed and strength I didn't possess at this point in my previous life.
