The disciplinary actions we develop in consultation with districts reflect the real world. For example, illegally downloading music or movies is theft: A student wouldn’t walk into a store and steal a DVD or CD, so why would they download one without paying for it? They need to understand that their online self is the same as their real self, and as such, they must act appropriately and deal with the same consequences in both environments.

With the contract in place and explained, the responsibility always comes back to the student. We don’t have to create rules—our students must decide if their actions are in line with the principles to which they have committed themselves.

Most of the schools we work with have wide-open Internet, or Internet with very basic filtering in place. As several students have told us, filtering the Internet only makes it difficult for the adults; the students know how to use a proxy server and punch a hole through the filter. In addition, all that’s really required is any one of their 3G devices, which are of course completely unfiltered, as is the Internet they use at home and everywhere else. We believe that rather than trying to block the Internet, a better solution is provided through the Digital Citizenship Agreement, which, through their commitment to respecting and protecting themselves, others, and intellectual property, defines their online behavior at all times—both in school and out. We have provided you with samples of two Digital Citizenship agreements, one for middle school and one for high school, on the next two pages. We invite you to copy them and make good use of their guidelines as part of fostering an environment geared toward Global Digital Citizenry in regards to your student’s class projects.

By extension, we also recommend allowing students to use their own devices—that is, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and so forth. One-to-one computing would walk into our schools if we would allow it, and doing so would take the strain off the technology budget. Focus on providing an excellent network, let your students use the tools with which they are most familiar, and apply the savings to staff development instead. The Digital Citizenship Agreement governs the use of your students’ devices—off task with a cell phone or a pencil is still off task. A cell phone ringing in class takes everyone off task, so it is not respectful of others and therefore is in contradiction with the students’ obligations and has an appropriate predefined consequence. Such instances are all highly teachable moments and would serve to cultivate personal responsibility.
