To make dumplings for soup: To one serving (one bag) of bread mix, add I/3 cup water and 1 tablespoon margarine. Mix thoroughly. Drop by spoonfuls into bubbling soup. Cover and simmer for 2 minutes or until dumplings are thoroughly cooked.

This is a basic bread mix that can be used to make pan bread, pan biscuits, dumplings, pancakes, and tortillas.

At home:

Mix all dry ingredients together and divide into thirteen individual sandwich-size resealable plastic bags of 1/2 cup of bread mix per bag.

On the trail:

Add 1/4 cup water to one bag. Mix and knead the bag until the contents have the consistency of pie dough. Wrap dough along the peeled end of a branch in the form of a long, 6-inch blanket, and seal the end with a flap of dough. Hold over fire until golden brown. Slide or peel it off the stick to eat. (Note: It is better to use a small, live branch than a dead stick because the bread will slide off more easily once cooked.)

Caution: Be careful! Some shrubs and trees are poisonous, so exercise care when selecting a branch to use with this recipe. Know what you are doing and positively identify the safety of the tree or shrub from which the branch comes.
