Proclaiming Oblivion

Jack waits until the car with the pretty girl passes by him to throw the puppy’s corpse out the window of his own vehicle. He watches it land with a dull heft in the roadway and he stares at it for a moment. In an ominous way, as if he is a necromancer conjuring the animal’s spirit so he may pass on his prophecy, he says, “He will allow the girl to suffer and die too. He is filthy, internally. And then I will kill him, so he may face his God with the agony of his lover on his conscience. May he be judged and damned with her blood on him for eternity.” He spits out the window and it lands near the dead dog. “It will be nice. She looks enjoyable in all things.”

He drives off, the sound of his tires pushing residual rainwater into miniature plumes as they retract from the discarded embodiment of Bale and Jennifer’s family.
