“She’s finally asleep,” Reece said as he came out of the bedroom. “She put up a fight and went down only after I’d agreed to read her another bedtime story.”

Emily smiled, knowing it was time for her to leave. She needed a good night’s sleep, too. Besides, Reece had only invited her along because Sophie had insisted on her joining them. An ache began in her chest and settled in her stomach. Tonight had been a bad idea. She was getting too attached to this child. Emily knew that when it was time for Reece and Sophie to leave, she would be hurt.

“Well, thank you for letting me intrude on your date.” She started for the door.

“It’s still early. What do you say to a cup of coffee?”

Tell him no and just leave, she ordered herself. “I’m not sure I should.”

He looked at her with those sexy dark eyes. “I need a favor.”

“Sure.” Her heart was pounding in her chest as he filled two mugs and brought them to the coffee table.

“I added milk and one sugar,” he told her. “That’s how you take it, isn’t it?”

With a nod, she sank onto the sofa and cradled the warm cup in her hands.

He sat down next to her. “Does the offer still stand about taking Sophie shopping? I know you’re busy now, but Sophie really needs some things.”

She was surprised. “No problem,” she said. “What does she need?”

“Well, as you know, her wardrobe is pretty limited. And since Sophie’s been in school, she’s been voicing an opinion on what she wants.” His gaze settled on Emily once again. “Six weeks ago, I could barely get her to say a word. Now, as you’ve seen, she’s become quite a chatterbox.” He shook his head as a smile creased his mouth. “She reminds me a lot of Carrie.”

Emily could also see a flash of sadness on his eyes. “You miss your sister, don’t you?”

He shrugged. “I hadn’t seen her in years, but she was pretty stubborn when she was Sophie’s age.” He glanced away as if to say he wasn’t ready to talk about his past. “I know you’re busy, but I’d appreciate any help.”

“Sure. I’m not expected at the ranch until the afternoon tomorrow. Why don’t you make a list of things Sophie needs and I’ll take her shopping in the morning and then bring her out to the ranch after we’re finished.”

“I have to be out at the ranch by seven. I’m doing a run-through on one of the scenes with Jenny Tate, but I should be free in the afternoon to take Sophie,” he said.

Emily tried not to react to the fact that Reece was going to spend time with the beautiful actress. “I watched Jenny the other day. She rides very well.”

“She’s doing all her own riding, but we still have to choreograph it.”

Of course they did. Why wasn’t she thinking logically? But was she supposed to believe that Reece hadn’t noticed that Jennifer Tate was drop-dead gorgeous? Not her business.
