Back in his vehicle, Holt finally had a chance to glance at his phone to see who had been blowing it up. Rachel, Pennyâa lot from PennyâMarty, Julianna, Grace, and his dad.
He called Penny first.
She answered mid first ring. âDid you catch him?â
âNo, he was long gone by the time we got there, but we got some footage from the bridge cameras. He was there.â
âSo, I didnât imagine it,â she whispered.
âNo, you didnât.â He paused. âYour buddy Frankie Olander was there too.â
âWhat! I didnât see him.â She frowned. âHe was waiting on us when we got back to base. Sitting on the couch like he owned the place. Howâd he get back here so fast?â
âIâm sure you had things to do once you landed and got the patient off the bird?â
âYes, of course. We cleaned everything up and . . . yeah, okay. Frankie would have been able to get here and have a nap before we returned to base. Usually thereâs someone here. I guess everyone was out on a call or something.â She sighed, and he wished he could wrap her in a hug.
âPenny, one of the witnesses said they didnât think the victim jumped. They think she was pushed.â
âPushed? By who?â
âThey donât know, and the footage isnât clear, but Iâm willing to bet it was Rabor.â
âBut . . . why?â
âI donât know, but I do know that he doesnât do anything without a reason.â
âSo, what now?â
âIâm coming by the hospital to talk to the woman. See if she remembers anything. I just got a call that she is awake.â
âOne of the paramedics said she was screaming something but not really making any sense. She was fighting them, and they had to sedate her in order to treat her.â
âDid he say what she was saying?â
âNo. Didnât any of the witnesses tell you?â
âNone of them mentioned it. Maybe sheâll be able to tell me. Iâll come by and see you when I finish talking to her.â
âIâll meet you there. I wouldnât mind checking on her.â
âPenny, this isââ
âAn investigation. I know. Iâm not asking you to tell me anything. See you in a few.â
She hung up and Holt let out a low huff under his breath. It would take him longer to get to the victimâs room than it would take Penny.
Technically, there was nothing wrongâor even unusualâin her checking up on someone sheâd just saved. Sheâd done so many times before. And it might not be a bad thing to have her there. The victimâTheresa Mabryâmight be more comfortable with Pennyâs presence. That is, if she was aware of Pennyâs involvement in her rescue. Then again, if she really had jumped, she might be furious with Penny for helping save her.
He pressed the gas and made it to the hospital in record time. When he arrived at Theresaâs room, he found Penny standing next to the womanâs bed, talking softly.
âPenny?â
She turned. âTheresaâs awake. Her mother was here but decided to take a break and let me hang out while she grabbed some coffee.
