20 MARCH 2014

It’s time to do the deed. Kate’s been psyching herself up to do this job for a whole year, ever since she and Howard got back from that terrible weekend in Wiltshire, but there’s never seemed to be a moment when she’s felt brave enough. Now, Eastenders has finished and the rest of the evening stretches away endlessly. Howard won’t be home from the club for hours and it’s too soon to try to sleep, although Kate’s eyelids are already drooping. She’s helped to run a lively follow-up activity to World Book Day today with lots of drama and art, and although everyone’s had a great time, it’s left her feeling emptier than ever.

Climbing the stairs, step by exhausting step, Kate wonders if this is what her life is going to be like now. She’s only forty and yet tonight she feels as old as the hills, because she’s had a busy day. Or is that really why she’s so tired? Maybe it’s the fact of it being her wedding anniversary yet again, and the thought of that only brings a kind of resignation instead of any kind of romance.

‘You forgot to take your clubs out of the boot,’ she said. ‘You don’t usually like to leave them in there overnight.’

The shifty look that Howard often adopted when golf was mentioned appeared on his face. ‘Oh, didn’t I tell you?’ he said. ‘This place has got a deal with the local club, and part of the package for the weekend is a day on the green. A couple of the guys and their wives are joining us. We’ll meet them in the bar when we’ve checked in. You like Billie, don’t you? She says she’s looking forward to seeing you again.’

Kate opens her mouth to speak but there are no words. She can’t believe she’s fallen for this trick yet again. Not only is she going to be spending her wedding anniversary and birthday celebrations without a husband by her side, she’s also going to be stuck with the woman she always thinks of as Botox Billie, who’s had so much work done that it’s impossible to tell what she’s thinking. Or if she’s thinking at all, for that matter. Her forehead never moves.

Kate follows Howard into the hotel, which in
