Itâs time to do the deed. Kateâs been psyching herself up to do this job for a whole year, ever since she and Howard got back from that terrible weekend in Wiltshire, but thereâs never seemed to be a moment when sheâs felt brave enough. Now, Eastenders has finished and the rest of the evening stretches away endlessly. Howard wonât be home from the club for hours and itâs too soon to try to sleep, although Kateâs eyelids are already drooping. Sheâs helped to run a lively follow-up activity to World Book Day today with lots of drama and art, and although everyoneâs had a great time, itâs left her feeling emptier than ever.
Climbing the stairs, step by exhausting step, Kate wonders if this is what her life is going to be like now. Sheâs only forty and yet tonight she feels as old as the hills, because sheâs had a busy day. Or is that really why sheâs so tired? Maybe itâs the fact of it being her wedding anniversary yet again, and the thought of that only brings a kind of resignation instead of any kind of romance.
Romance was almost what sheâd thought Howard had in mind this time last year when heâd presented her with the brochure for the fancy hotel. Sheâd even started to look forward to the break as theyâd driven through pretty countryside chatting about what they might choose for dinner. It was just like being a happily married couple who were celebrating the day when theyâd made their promises, instead of two people with very little in common trying to avoid awkward silences.
Howard had parked the car and taken Kateâs case and his overnight bag out of the boot. It was only then that sheâd spotted the full set of golf clubs that had been hidden beneath the other things.
âYou forgot to take your clubs out of the boot,â she said. âYou donât usually like to leave them in there overnight.â
The shifty look that Howard often adopted when golf was mentioned appeared on his face. âOh, didnât I tell you?â he said. âThis place has got a deal with the local club, and part of the package for the weekend is a day on the green. A couple of the guys and their wives are joining us. Weâll meet them in the bar when weâve checked in. You like Billie, donât you? She says sheâs looking forward to seeing you again.â
Kate opens her mouth to speak but there are no words. She canât believe sheâs fallen for this trick yet again. Not only is she going to be spending her wedding anniversary and birthday celebrations without a husband by her side, sheâs also going to be stuck with the woman she always thinks of as Botox Billie, whoâs had so much work done that itâs impossible to tell what sheâs thinking. Or if sheâs thinking at all, for that matter. Her forehead never moves.
Kate follows Howard into the hotel, which in
