In My Hands

Sophie Beauford

Always around but never involved. That’s my motto. The one I’ve managed to stick to for several years up until this one. Regardless, I probably know more about criminal activities than most, especially regarding my family. My father has been trying since I turned eighteen to involve me in his “family business”—which I learned a long time ago that I’m not cut out for.

Despite not being involved, my constant knowledge of these activities makes me feel otherwise. Like right now. I can overhear my father and Damien discussing their latest plans for the Carter family in his office. Not surprisingly, they seem to think the answer to their problem is murder. What a barbaric way of thinking.

I listen as the two make their plans and leave. I linger a bit longer, my heart and mind growing heavy with one question. Should I intervene? This would be the second time Mason has caused me to second-guess my way of living.

Part of me wants to leave things as they are and learn of the outcomes later. However, another part of me feels compelled to step in. I don’t know if it’s guilt or my conscience driving me to my conclusion. Either way, I feel I must do something.

Mason doesn’t deserve to die. Clear as day, the reckoning thought hits me. No matter how I could justify it in my mind, Mason would always be innocent in this—or the most innocent. He is just like me, out of the destructive paths our families led until we weren’t.

I sigh as I walk out of the house. Would my father disown me for getting in his way? The thought probably sounds silly, but it’s right up his alley. Whatever the consequence, I’d just have to deal with it. Mason doesn’t deserve the hand he is being dealt.

I drive to my place and pull into the driveway. When I make it inside, it’s quiet, dark, and lonely. The way my life is meant to be, I suppose. I go into my room and inside my closet. I stand on my tiptoes and reach the shelf above me. I drag my fingers along it until they come in contact with a small box, which I pull down and open. Inside is a tape with the footage of the night Violet was kidnapped, courtesy of a nearby shop. Obtaining it was easy enough, thanks to my father’s strong presence in the area.

I twist the tape in my hands. Most importantly, it proves Mason’s innocence. It clearly shows Damien—though no one could tell behind the mask—dragging Violet away and Mason trying to stop him before being kicked in the head. The weight of this evidence feels heavier than the physical object in my hands. I take out my phone and send a message.

Hey cousin, are you busy today? I wanted your help with something.

Can it wait? Handling some stuff with Uncle today, he replies.

Sure, not a problem. Where are you guys headed?

I bite my lip when I send the message.
