JAKE ARRIVED AT Fiona’s house after sunset and parked in the driveway beside her car. The house was dark.

Something’s wrong.

He got out of the car and walked to the front door. Before entering the house, he took off his shoes and placed them by the door. He turned the doorknob, expecting the door to be locked. It wasn’t.

A pale light from the streetlight near the house seeped through the window into the room. He stopped, allowing his eyes to adjust to the relative darkness inside the house, and listened for any noise. Silence. He walked toward Fiona’s bedroom. The wood floor creaked under his weight. The door was ajar. He pushed it open and saw her, lying face down on her bed, her arms out to the side. In two long steps Jake was at the bed beside her, grabbing her shoulders and calling out, “Fiona! Fiona!”

She rolled over, flaying her arms and kicking her legs, and screaming.

“Fiona! It’s me, Jake.”

She sat up in the bed and put her hand over her heart. “Jake! You scared me to death! What are you doing sneaking in here like this?”

“I thought you might have been – well, you know, hurt.”

Fiona pulled her hair back from her face. She reached over and turned on the bedside lamp.

“When I got home, I lay on the bed to rest while I waited for you and went out like a light. I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Why didn’t you lock your door? Don’t you remember what I said? We are dealing with some very dangerous people.”

“Actually, I think you said ‘seriously bad dudes.’” Fiona moved to the side to look at his head wound. “Ouch, bet that hurt,” she said, wincing.

“Don’t change the subject.”

“I’m not in the habit of locking my front door when I am home. This is a safe country and a safe village. And besides, I can protect myself.”

“You can protect yourself, can you? What? Did you to take an e-learning self-defense course at work? I’m staying here tonight.”

“Sorry, I don’t remember inviting you to spend the night.”

“I’ll sleep on the sofa. That way I’ll be safe from you. And, if I get out of line, you have permission to kick my butt.”

“You should be so lucky. As for kicking your butt, you seem like the type who might be into a little S&M. You can stay, but I’m not cooking dinner.”

“Fine, let’s go out. I’ll buy,” Jake offered.

“Fine, I’ll let you.” Fiona looked down at Jake’s feet. “Where are your shoes?”

“My shoes were muddy. I didn’t want to track it in your house.”

They looked at each other and laughed. “Give me a few minutes to get ready.”

Jake called the Milestone to cancel his room, then turned on the television in the living room and watched the BBC One evening news. The newsreader was giving an update on the body found on the bank of the Thames, saying the police were continuing their investigation. Fiona emerged from her bedroom in about ten minutes, and they left for dinner.
