Joe was not giving the problem his full attention.

“An elephant,” I said. “Joe, there’s got to be a way to solve this.”

“David, I think there’s no way out,” said Joe, waving his trunk around. “You’re stuck with being in the school play.”

“What did you say?” I asked.

“I’m sure Joe didn’t mean —” began Bec.

“No. No, he’s right. He’s a genius! They’ll kick me out for sure.”

Joe waved his trunk.

“I don’t get it,” said Bec.

“Let me work on it.” I stopped talking and watched Joe, who had stuck the sock onto his ear.

“What am I now?” he asked.

“A boy with a red sock on his ear,” said Bec.
