Fourteen

The day after our Chicago trip, I’m sitting at the kitchen table finding photos online to use for my diamonds flash cards, which is the only suit I haven’t worked on. I am—perhaps—spending a little more time than is strictly necessary finding the perfect picture of Harry Styles, but I feel Grandma deserves my very best effort.

At ten, Emma twirls into the kitchen and kisses the top of my head. “Good morning, very best sister.”

Laughing, I say, “You’re in a good mood.”

“I am. And it’s because of you. Let me take you out for a pedicure to celebrate.”

I gesture at the computer. “I don’t know, Em … these sequences aren’t sticking, and I’ve only got a week to the checkpoint. Might be time to put some hours in.”

She rests her chin on my head. “I know. But we went a whole year without seeing each other, and I was gone for the first part of summer, and we’ll be in different places again in August, and I really, really do want to thank you.”

I have missed her, and someday in not so long, we won’t even be coming back to the same house for the summer. And even if I don’t have the sleights 100 percent down for the checkpoint, I can probably achieve minimally competent through sparkle alone. It’s magic, not rocket science.

“Well … I do need to print these pictures somewhere before I can make my last set of flash cards,” I say.

She claps. “Yay! Go get cleaned up and we’ll go.”
