Mamá,

I went to the school library, but couldn’t find any books to explain this so I went into the church facing the park. Someone gave me a book that mentioned Jesus and the country where he was born. Mamá! He was almost born in Africa! Amazing, isn’t it? Do you think that God can speak African? I don’t think so. The old flower lady explained to me that Olofi is the name of the black people’s God, but he’s the same as the white God. Each group gives him the name and color they want. God made different-colored people because he is like a child bored by things that are all alike.

I don’t think many white people know this story. They wouldn’t want to pray to an inkyskinned, fat-lipped God no matter how merciful he was. They wouldn’t find him handsome.
