“What’s going on?” I froze.

Because when I walked into my townhouse, I’d clearly interrupted something. Something that I could tell Alex and Dad had not meant for me to see, based on their rounded eyes. I’d told Dad I’d be out later because I hadn’t expected for Easton to show up at the bar.

Or beat up a guy who’d tried to hurt me.

Only beat up. I hadn’t left that alley until Easton walked away from the man before killing him. Only then did I rejoin Emily and call it a night.

Alex stood by the kitchen table, where Dad sat in his wheelchair with papers splayed out in front of him. Copies of police reports, photos of my injuries from the night of the robbery. In the middle of it all was Dad’s cell phone, currently on speaker.

“I’m gonna have to call you back.” Dad’s finger hovered over the End Call button.

“I have enough information to get started,” the man on the other end of the line said in a voice so gruff, he might have been a smoker. “I’ll be in touch.”

“What’s going on?” I repeated, unable to hide the alarm in my voice.

“Didn’t expect you home so soon.” Dad’s mouth curled down slightly.

“Who was that guy?” I motioned to the phone.

“Did you and Emily have a nice time?”

I looked at the table. “Where did you get all these police reports? And these photos? Do police hand these out to anyone who asks?” Wasn’t there some sort of privacy protection for something like this?

“I’m not anyone. I’m your father and the owner of the condo that was robbed.”

“Who was that on the phone? Because it didn’t sound like the police.”

“Zoey.”

“It was a private investigator.” Alex turned his lips down, as if he knew I wouldn’t like the answer.

Dad shot him a glower.

“A private investigator?” I put my hand over my stomach. “Why were you talking to a private investigator?”

Alex crossed his arms over his chest and couldn’t hide the frustration in his tone. “We hired him to help find the assholes who hurt you.”

“What?” I looked at Dad. Expecting him to tell me that Alex was wrong.

But Dad didn’t say that. Instead, he just offered me an empathetic look.

“Why would you hire a private investigator? The Chicago Police Department is working this case.”

“They’ve failed to arrest anyone.”

I threw my hand in the air. “It’s only been three days!”

“Most crimes need to be solved within forty-eight hours, or they go cold.”

“I think that’s for homicides, Dad.”

“They’re not moving fast enough. The longer this goes on, the harder it is to get justice.”

“Dad,” I started.

He slammed his fist onto the table. “Three men held you hostage and beat the hell out of you. And I’m not going to rest until they’re behind bars.”

This couldn’t be happening. Easton was right; the best way for me to stay alive was if this entire investigation fizzled out. Because even if I could miraculously get Brown behind bars, I had no doubt that Brown would order his crew to eliminate the witness.
