CHAPTER FIFTEEN

He flipped through the newspaper as he sat on the bench, feeling the warm sun on his skin. It was a good day. A nice day. He had done something good for the world, and now he could be at peace.

George had paid for what he'd done, and that was all he could ask for. Now, he was free, free to sit alone and relish in the newfound peace.

Until he flipped to a news article that made his stomach curl with disgust.

Elderly man who ran over child dies of heart attack.

His palms became sweaty as he read more of the article:

Roger Phelps, 96, has passed away only a week after accidentally running over and killing a child while driving a car. Phelps, who'd had his license suspended for many years, was allegedly confused as he got behind the wheel, and doctors have said dementia was involved. The child, 7, died from their injuries on the scene, while Phelps was transported to a medical facility, where he has since passed away.

"Roger," he said out loud, rage growing inside of him. "Roger, you killed someone!"

A woman passing by on the street shot him a look, and he turned to her, scowling. She kept walking, hurrying down the busy downtown street.

He glared at her. What was she, a Roger sympathizer?

"Of course she is," a voice suddenly said, and his eyes darted to his left--only to see an old man wearing a suit and a hat, sitting right beside him on the bench, wearing a wicked smile.

Fear caused him to freeze. No, no, not again--not here!

"That's right," Roger said, "I'm here, and I'm going to kill again."

"No!" he shouted, standing up. "No, I won't let you!"

More people glanced as they passed, and he wanted to curl into himself. He wasn't safe here, not with Roger now with him.

"You aren't in charge anymore," Roger said, "I am."

"No," he said, trying to breathe normally. "No, that's not true. I stopped you. There's nothing you can do to me."

"Oh, you're wrong," Roger said, his voice smooth. "I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. There's nothing stopping me. There is no one to stop me."

"I will stop you," he said, his voice shaking. "I've stopped you before, and I'll stop you again. I'll stop you for good."

Roger smiled. "Really? You and what army?"

He let out a laugh. "I have myself."

"Calm down, my friend," Roger said, his tone mocking. "You're just being paranoid."

"You killed an innocent child!" he yelled, and Roger leaned away from him.

"Yes," Roger said, "and I'm going to kill again."

With that, Roger took off down the street--and he chased after him, panic surging through his chest. He couldn't let this happen! Whoever Roger was going to kill, he'd have to stop it. He could do it. He had to.

Roger led him into a dark alleyway. Then, he stopped and looked out at the busy street. A smile curled at his lips.

"How about her?" Roger asked, pointing to the young woman across the street, who paced by with a phone in her hand.
