Every February, all the fifth-graders at Grissom Elementary went on a field trip to the art museum in Indianapolis. The city was over an hour away, so it was a full-day excursion. Though the museum had a café, the students were required to bring a sack lunch—because I couldn’t imagine anything more hellish than ordering food for 60 picky and indecisive fifth graders. Mr. Woods, the art teacher, always led the students through each exhibit, asking them to stop and sketch what they observed. Between the sack lunches, sketchbooks, and everyone’s gift shop money, it was a lot to manage.

Owen loathed this particular field trip, dreading it every year. And that morning wasn’t any different. I awoke to a text from him trying to convince me he’d come down with strep throat. I would have believed him, too, if he hadn’t followed it up with a text about also having a sudden bout of explosive diarrhea.

Sarah: That’s what cough drops and diapers are for. Suck it up, buttercup. I’m not doing this alone.
