Joe Stewart, the Redwoods, Mill Valley’s Other Community Center

The Redwoods, Mill Valley’s senior living community, is a testament to what a community can accomplish. Unlike many complexes built for older adults, the Redwoods does not make one think of a “retirement home.” Instead, it functions more as a second community center for the town. But if it weren’t for Joe Stewart’s willingness to put his money where his mouth was, the Redwoods might never have been built.

Joe and a few other members of Mill Valley’s Community Church conceived the idea for the Redwoods in 1970. They proposed that the church support a senior living community in town, and they formed a committee to research the idea. From the beginning, the project was viewed as a way for seniors to “age in place,” with access to various levels of support as their needs increased. The committee also wanted this community to be affordable, regardless of financial circumstances. It struck out in search of a location for the venture.

Committee members identified a piece of property just right for the complex, but the church didn’t have enough money to buy it. Joe Stewart was determined to make it happen, however, and so he mortgaged his house to buy the land. The Redwoods welcomed its first residents in 1972.

Since then, the Redwoods has become a freestanding, not-for-profit senior residential community. Its wisteria-draped patio, beautiful lobby, and large auditorium have hosted many community-wide gatherings—including candidate debates, political forums, and celebrations.

In 2010, the Redwoods hosted a board of trustees reunion, bringing together current and former board members representing 38 years of service to Mill Valley’s vibrant senior community. (Courtesy of the Redwoods.)
