CHAPTER 4
EERIE ENCOUNTER
The Mystery Inc. gang walked through the forest back to the camp. The cabins were all dark, but Daphne saw a shadowy shape moving inside one of them.
âI think thereâs something in Professor Dinkleyâs cabin,â she said.
âZoinks! Not the Gator Man again!â Shaggy worried.
âRot ragain!â echoed Scooby.
THUMP! BUMP!
They heard the sound of furniture being knocked over.
âCould it be a bear?â Daphne asked.
âMaybe a coyote,â said Velma, having read a little about the local wildlife.
âOww!â came a painful yelp.
âLike, what was that?â cried Shaggy.
âOww!â the yelp came again.
âItâs not something. Someone is in my uncleâs cabin,â Velma realized.
âWho could it be?â Daphne wondered.
Suddenly, the shape of a round man stumbled out of the cabin door and onto the front porch. He wore safari clothing and a pith helmet. His glasses were crooked on his nose, and he straightened them before he noticed the the Mystery Inc. gang.
âOh! Hello, kids! There you are!â the man said cheerfully. âIsnât it a little late to be out exploring?â
âUncle Cosmo!â Velma exclaimed.
âProfessor Dinkley! We were worried about you,â Fred said.
âReah rorried,â Scooby chimed in.
âWorried? About me? Why?â Professor Dinkley asked.
âLike, we thought the Gator Man had gotten you,â Shaggy replied.
Professor Dinkley chuckled a little at that. âNo. I spent all day in town trying to get my archaeology tourists to come back to the dig,â he explained. âIâm sorry I wasnât here when you arrived.â
âThe camp was deserted when we got here,â Fred said.
âRit was rooky,â Scooby barked.
âYeah. Like, what he said,â added Shaggy.
âThat terrible Gator Man scared away all my clients,â Professor Dinkley told the kids. âIâve had to refund their money, and without them or the fee they paid, I canât finance or finish the dig.â
âWe can help you with the dig, Uncle Cosmo,â Velma volunteered.
âLike, youâre not afraid that the Gator Man will come back and finish what he started?â Shaggy trembled.
Scooby-Doo shook along with him.
âIâm about to make a major discovery at the dig,â the professor revealed. âI canât stop now, Gator Man or not.â
âDonât worry, Shaggy. I told you, I have a plan to take care of that scaly spook,â Fred assured his friend.
âRut rind of ran?â Scooby asked.
âIâm going to build a trap!â Fred replied. âOnce we get to the dig site tomorrow and I study the area, Iâll be able to design the perfect ambush.â
âAnd once we have the Gator Man, weâll find out whatâs behind all his scare tactics,â Velma declared.
