CHAPTER 17

Daniel and Ethan escorted Kirsty across the road to the waiting van. As it was dark, it would be hard for anyone inside the gallery to see her being bundled inside.

Ethan banged on the rear door, which was opened by Richard.

‘Who’s she?’ he frowned.

‘I’ll explain in a minute,’ he replied. ‘Help her in.’

Richard took Kirsty’s hand and hauled her into the van, Ethan and Daniel climbing in after her and pulling the door closed. There was a light on, so they could see. Another of their trusted men was with Richard.

‘This idiot tried to stab Jules,’ explained Ethan.

‘Jesus, is she all right?’ said Richard.

‘Yeah, course she is. She punched Kirsty in the face before she could land a blow. Also, the knife was made of rubber.’

‘What the actual fuck?’

‘No idea but I’m going to make her tell us.’ Ethan turned to Kirsty. ‘Why were you going to stab my aunt with a rubber knife, you bitch?’

Kirsty spat in his face in response.

‘Dirty cow,’ grunted Ethan, wiping his face on the back of his sleeve. ‘I hate spitting.’

She just glowered back at him.

‘We don’t have time for games,’ said Ethan. ‘Dan, make sure she doesn’t make a noise.’

Kirsty’s eyes bulged when Daniel’s big hand clamped down over her mouth. Ethan pressed his thumb to her lower eyelid and her body jerked in panic as it felt like her eyeball was going to fall out.

‘My dad taught me this,’ he said in a quiet, hard voice. ‘He popped out loads of people’s eyeballs. He even made one man eat his own eye. I won’t do that to you, but I will blind you. You no doubt know who we are, so you’ll know that I’m not bluffing. If you don’t start talking, I’ll tear that pretty eye right out of your head.’

‘I think she’s ready to tell us,’ said Daniel when Kirsty frantically gabbled into his hand.

Ethan nodded and Daniel removed his hand.

‘Look, I was just paid to do it, okay?’ she said, breathless with fear. Ethan had kept his thumb pressed to her eyelid. Although he wasn’t putting on any pressure, the threat was still there, causing her to remain rigid in her seat. ‘I was just to scare her.’

‘Clearly you don’t know my aunt. Who paid you?’

‘Buck Bailey.’

This came as a surprise. They’d thought Buck had been killed and buried by his own crew.

‘When did he pay you?’ said Ethan, thinking he could have done it before his crew caught up with him.

‘This morning,’ she replied, shooting down that theory.

‘What was the point?’

‘I had to ruin her big moment somehow.’

‘Did he suggest the rubber knife?’

‘Not exactly. He said to humiliate and embarrass her.’

‘And you thought that was the right way to do it?’

‘It was all I could think of.’

‘You’re not used to violence, are you?’

‘No.’

‘How do you know Buck?’

‘He’s my ex-boyfriend. He knew I was skint and said I could earn five grand. He said it was perfect because I’ve worked at the gallery for two months.’

‘Did he know you were going to use a rubber knife?’

‘No.
