In a recent interview,37 Angela Gregory, a psychosexual therapist at Nottingham University Hospital, commented that over the last 10 years, she has seen an increasing number of young men presenting with sexual difficulties that have their root in porn and chat room use. Many young people, girls as well as boys, are growing up casually watching porn in the same way they would watch a romcom or sport on TV. They consider it a ‘normal’ pastime, not realising the chemical changes it brings about in the brain, its addictive effect, and the fact that it can ruin their ability to build a healthy sexual relationship.

As a society, we can no longer bury our heads in the sand. Fifty years ago, smoking was an accepted social practice. Unbelievably, advertisements featured doctors promoting cigarettes and pregnant mothers celebrating smoking in pregnancy because it gave the ‘win-win’ of smaller babies and easy labour. Yet today, cigarettes are locked away in grey cabinets behind the counter, packets come with government health warnings, and smoking is banned in public places because society has realised the damage it causes and has taken action. In the same way, we have been ignorant of the damage that watching pornography can do to our health, especially the health of our children, and again it is time to take action.

As parents, many of us need a wake-up call to understand the seriousness of the issue. If you are still in doubt, here are three reasons why this matters:
