BOYD COFFEE COMPANY

A HORSE-DRAWN BEGINNING

Forget the sizzle of the steam wand—in 1900, you knew it was coffee time by the sound of hooves clip-clopping on the street in front of your house. That year, Percival Dewe Boyd began selling fresh-roasted coffee, spices, and tea to Portland’s expanding populace out of a red horse-drawn wagon. By 1910 the horses had been replaced by a fleet of Model Ts. Fast-forward to 1971, and Boyd Coffee Company, or Boyds, was a fully modern coffee enterprise with a brand-new 30-acre headquarters outside of Portland. The headquarters is still there, including a roastery and warehouse totaling 400,000 square feet. From it, Boyds ships millions of pounds of roasted coffee every year to cafés, restaurants, and grocery stores as far as Chicago and Texas.
