Locked Out

James’s second season in Miami would have to wait. The labor agreement between NBA owners and its players expired during the summer of 2011, and, with no new contract set, the next NBA season did not start on time. Instead, the league entered into a period known in sports as a lockout. While the NBA Players Association and team owners negotiated a new deal, James and the rest of the NBA players tried to stay in shape. James worked out with NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon during this time, trying to improve his game after a third straight season that ended in defeat in the NBA Finals. He also played in an exhibition game in Baltimore over the summer that featured fellow NBA stars Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony. Ticket sales from the event were donated to charitable causes close to Anthony’s heart.

Negotiations between the league and the players association took months, and often it appeared that—like the National Hockey League in 2004–2005—a season might not happen. However, on November 26, 2011, the lockout came to a tentative end. The late-November deal allowed the 2011–2012 season to happen. On Christmas Day, the NBA began a 66-game schedule. James and the Heat could make another run at an NBA title. He and many other NBA players were ready to get back to basketball.
