CHAPTER SIXTEEN

BREAKFAST WAS THE last thing on my mind as I sat with Damian and Randi, my gaze skittering anxiously around the room. Braden had been by my side last night, but by morning, his side of the bed was as cold as my growing dread. And Midnight, nowhere to be found. As the pit in my stomach dug deeper, Damian’s offhand remark to Hillbilly confirmed my fears.

“Damn, Brother, you missed one helluva fight last night!” Damian taunted, his grin a bit too smug.

Hillbilly grumbled back, “Heard about it. Hope someone recorded it.”

“Guys!” Randi snapped, sending a warning glance my way.

The change in subject was swift. “Daphne’s swinging by to grab you, right?” Damian asked, eyes back on me.

“Yeah, she’s taking me to the appointment with her hairdresser friend,” I confirmed, grateful for the temporary distraction.

“Wow, sounds like a girls’ day!” Randi chimed in; her excitement was genuine. “Can’t wait to see the result.”

“Me neither. Don’t forget you got my number,” Damian said, his gaze heavy with concern.

“I remember.” I checked my phone, the usual anxiety taking over. “I should be going,” I announced, excusing myself. After a quick stop in my room to grab my purse, I ventured out front to wait for Daphne. And there, propped up against the wall like a battered street fighter, was Midnight.

A gasp caught in my throat at the sight of his bruised, swollen features. “Look what he did to you,” I choked out, my hands instinctively reaching for his marred face.

Midnight attempted a smile, but it seemed painful. “Don’t worry, Aislynn. Leather looks just as rough. It was a fair fight.”

“No!” I burst out, tears of anger and confusion welling in my eyes. “Fighting should never be the answer.”

He wrapped my wrists gently, guiding my hands away from his beaten face. “Listen, Aislynn. This... this is our reality. It needed to happen. We’re okay, just a bit bruised is all.”

“Shouldn’t be your reality,” I whispered, trembling. “Especially not over me. I can’t stand that.”

“I had to show Leather he needs to let you grow; let you find your own path. It’s a lesson he needed to learn,” Midnight defended. “Trust me, it’s for his own good, Aislynn.”

The crunch of tires on gravel signaled Daphne’s arrival. As Midnight let go of my wrists, I couldn’t help but feel torn. I knew he was right—Braden needed to rein in his possessiveness. But it bothers me so much that they were fighting over me. “You sure you’re okay?” I asked one last time, my heart pounding.

“Give me a few days, I’ll be right as rain,” he promised. “I’ll see you when you get back. Holler if you need anything.”

With a final wave to Midnight, I launched myself into Daphne’s car. “Holy guacamole, did Leather finally get a hold of him?” Daphne inquired, swinging the car around in a near arc.

“Yeah. How did you know?”

“Seriously, Aislynn?” Daphne responded, laughter sparkling in her eyes. “Those two have been circling each other like roosters at a cockfight for the past week.
