As you can see, there are multiple reasons to use the new VHDX format. Just keep in mind that in case you need to move a disk to a Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2, you'll have to change the disk type, as 2008 and 2008 R2 does not support VHDX. Also, remember that when you create a VM on Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2, the VM native disk will be a VHDX disk.

In case you need to convert a VHDX file into a VHD file, or vice-versa, you can use the following cmdlet:

Convert-VHD -DestinationPath E:\destinationdisk.vhd -Path E:\originaldisk.vhdx
