The final elements of modern web design are the styling rules that are written into the HTML for the browser to interpret. Styles are designed using CSS, and once again, there is a particular way that the rules must be written. Remember! Computers are dumb, and they require precise instructions in order to do their jobs. There is a syntax to CSS styling rules just as there is for writing HTML.

Let’s look at the example from the simple web page that you saw in Figure 1.3. To style the text in the (only) paragraph on that page, a class attribute might be added that assigns the class named "red-emphasis".

<p class="red-emphasis"> How are you doing? </p>

To apply a style to the paragraph, a CSS rule is written that alters the appearance of the text. A CSS rule contains a selector and a declaration block, as you see in Figure 1.4.
