Chapter 11

“HOW DOES IT WORK?” Elder Othar frowned as he examined me from every angle. If it was up to him, he’d probably even taste me, but that wasn’t going to happen, of course.

“It’s full conjunction, performed in the world of demons. We’ve explained this before,” I replied, looking at myself in the large floor mirror — a Third Tier artifact we’d bought at an auction and one of Vyllea’s most prized possessions. I saw two bright yellow eyes with vertical pupils in my reflection, perfectly identical to those of a true demon — which was, essentially, what I had become.

“So no one can tell you’re human?” Elder Othar still seemed skeptical. He appeared to have become more cordial since my transformation — at least, he was no longer looking at me down his nose when he was addressing me.

“Demons below the Overlord stage will have no way of telling — even with identifying artifacts. I haven’t encountered Nascent Gods yet. Well, there was one instance, but I had been too young and hadn’t yet formed the conjunction with Vyllea back then.”

“You’ve already encountered a Nascent God? Who and when?”

I had to strain my memory to recall the name.

“His name was Greakon Mink. It happened about four years ago, at the tournament in Zou-Lemawn.”

“Ah, I remember. The Nascent God who’d once ruled the southern sector of Circles Zero, One, and Two. They say he had been treacherously killed by a human named Guerlon — a Seeker like you and Vyllea.”

“That’s a very heavily-edited version of events. Especially considering that Seeker Guerlon was only at the Master stage at the time. Treacherous killer? That one’s amusing — I’m sure my mentor will have a good laugh.”

“Mentor?” Elder Othar reacted as if struck by a whip.

“Didn’t you know? Vyllea and I are personal apprentices of Seeker Guerlon, a Nascent God of the Copper rank. As for his supposed treacherous murder of Greakon Mink, your information is unverified. Could a Master, even one of the Diamond rank, have truly stood against a Nascent God and vanquished him? I don’t underestimate my mentor’s abilities in the least — he’s a great Taoist, but not to the extent of having defeated such an opponent single-handedly. Furthermore, mentor Guerlon would never consume the cores, centers, and meridians of a defeated foe. There were other beings present at the arena in Zou-Lemawn, and it had been their doing.”

“Gold-ranked Overlord Shang Li?” Elder Othar was good at piecing information together. “What happened in the arena a few years ago? Why didn’t any of the spectators survive?”

“Again, unconfirmed information. Vyllea and I have survived, and we were definitely among the spectators. No non-disclosure agreements or oaths of secrecy have been given by either of us, so I see no harm in recounting the events as they happened. It all began when we organized the tournament and it had suddenly attracted a whole bunch of participants from Circles Zero, One, and even Two. Everyone wanted to prove they were the best…”

“So that’s how it was…” Elder Othar mused, staring at the canopy of our tent.
