CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
It was after seven p.m. by the time Kaylie and Joshua had Minda processed, seated in the interview room, and ready to talk. Despite the long day and the exhausting chase, Kaylie felt as if sheâd been able to draw on reserves of energy she hadnât known about as she walked in to face her.
This was where she was going to start to get inside the mind of this woman. At last, she would start to understand what the situation between Minda and Evie had been, and if it had escalated all the way to murder.
It had most definitely escalated enough that Minda had felt the need to try and escape at all costs. And from the vicious attack that Kaylie had fended off, she could see this woman was impulsive, violent, and acted without thought for the consequences.
Stepping into the room behind her, Joshua closed the door and checked the recording equipment. In the bright lights, Kaylie thought that Minda didnât look subdued. Not yet. There was still a defiant tilt to her chin, and she had a feeling that the chase, and the fight, were not yet over, even though their suspect was sitting in the chair.
Minda's hair had escaped from its tie, and was wisping around her face. Her fingers were tightly laced together.
"Minda Murray, you've been taken into custody because of failure to obey and assaulting a law enforcement officer. Both of these are serious crimes on their own," Joshua said sternly. "But we have an even more serious crime to deal with here. Murder."
He stared at her and she stared angrily back.
"I didn't murder Evie," she said in a low voice.
"There was bad blood between you."
"That's not true."
"The staff at the Dawsonsâ condo told us that you and she had issues. Serious issues. It was noticeable to them. So the next question is: Why did you have a grievance with her?" Joshua pushed. "I'm not asking if you did. That's not the question. The question is why."
Watching him, Kaylie realized how bold and energetic he was now. There had definitely been something wrong earlier. Joshua had been under strain, big time, but heâd managed to get past it, and Kaylie still had no idea what it had all been about.
"Those staff were lying," Minda said.
"The housemaid didn't sound like she was lying at all. To me, it seemed like she was telling the truth. Perhaps the other staff might have noticed it too. You do realize that if you're the one whoâs lying, that's only going to land you in more trouble? It's decision time. Be truthful, or else things are going to get a whole lot worse for you." Kaylie stared at her challengingly.
"It was just one of those personal things," Minda said. As Kaylie had thought, she was doggedly sticking to her evasive tactics, even while seated in an interrogation room chair.
She was becoming more and more convinced, while watching her, that she had something to hide. She didn't yet know if it was murder.
