“We should stop,” Jim said on the ride home.

“Probably,” Ally agreed. “We’ve made a lot. If you’re uncomfortable, babe, we can quit.”

“It’s not that I’m uncomfortable, really,” Jim said. “I just, I don’t know, feel like I shouldn’t be using the magic for this.”

“I get it. I do,” Ally said, staring out at the passing flat countryside. “If you want to stop, let’s stop. Or, if you want, we can do one more. Pull in enough to make a bigger down payment on a house.”

“Yeah,” said Jim nodding. “With maybe enough left over to pay for a wedding?”

“Is that a proposal?” Ally asked.

“I suppose it is.”

Ally burst into laughter. “It sucked! We’re driving on a Mississippi highway and you didn’t even give me a ring. This is not the way this sort of thing usually goes down.”

“So, that’s a no?” Jim asked.

“Of course, it’s not, you idiot,” Ally said. “It’s a definite yes. But I still want a ring.”

“Then let’s come back one more time and win you one,” Jim said.

Ally leaned over and kissed Jim on the cheek. “Sounds like a plan, fiancée.”
