Chapter 15

Liam

I wake to the sound of a rooster crowing, something I haven’t heard in a long time, bringing back memories from my childhood. I’d wake up early and help Mom with the chickens, then get to work with Pop and Dalton on the Ranch. Mom would always have me check the coop for any eggs that day. If there were, I would bring them inside, and she would make us breakfast. Nothing beats the taste of fresh farm eggs.

Looking out the window, the sky is pumpkin orange, blood red, and dark blue. The sun hasn’t quite made it up over the horizon yet. Nothing compares to sunrises in Montana. I may talk a lot of shit about how I’m not a cowboy and don’t like the ranch life, but as I get older, the more I miss it. Nostalgia is all over the place.

My vision is still hazy from waking up. Reddish-brown messy hair peeks over the covers at me. I don’t know what possesses me, but I gently pull the blanket down, exposing Jake’s face. Admiring him, I move a strand of his hair off his forehead. He’s the most attractive man I have ever seen. And I’ve seen plenty.

Porcelain skin dusted with tan freckles, long dark eyelashes, plump, pink lips, and slightly rosy cheeks. Freckles even dust the tops of his shoulders, so faint I barely noticed them before. If I could, I’d watch him sleep forever.

Jake stirs and slowly opens his eyes, blinking away the sleepiness. “Good morning.” He smiles.

I pull my hand away quickly. “Good morning. How did you sleep?” Did he notice me touching him?

“Mmm. Amazing.” With a screech like a dinosaur, he stretches his arms over his head. I chuckle.

“Would you like some coffee?”

Jake opens one eye to meet mine, still stretching. “That sounds wonderful.”

“I’ll go get it started then.” Immediately, I get up out of bed and put on a pair of lounge pants and a t-shirt. Before leaving the room, I turn to look at Jake, watching after me from the bed. “Don’t rush around. Just come downstairs when you’re ready.” I unlock the door and leave.

“Mornin’!” Dalton greets me at the foot of the stairs. He narrows his eyes at me, then smiles a goofy grin. “Looks like you had a good night.”

I roll my eyes dismissively. “Since when did you start being the one to pick on me? I’m your older brother. It should be the other way around.”

Jake and I didn’t have sex last night. I know he was trying to get me to, but I can’t. How he makes me feel still scares me, and I have to protect myself. I remember the way his plump lips felt against mine the first time we kissed. How he eagerly curled his fingers in my hair, wanting more of me…

“Hello? You still with me, partner?” Dalton pokes the center of my forehead.

I shake my head, coming out of my daze, and playfully nudge his shoulder. “Did you make any coffee since you got up before me?”

“Sure did.
