Chapter Ten

Daisy

“I’m as big as a house and I love it.” Lake Montgomery beamed as she leaned back in her throne, also known as the reclining chair in her living room, and rested her hands on her bulging belly. Her swollen ankles were up on the footrest, and she had on a tiara with fuzzy pompoms glued on top. She looked absolutely ridiculous and glorious.

Lake’s mom snorted. “You’re not quite as big as a house, darling,” Arden Montgomery said with a wink. She sat down on the side throne, also known as the other reclining chair. All of Lake’s aunts on her father’s side of the family, the Crosses, laughed and told war stories of their pregnancies and how big they were.

A Montgomery baby shower was a force to be reckoned with. We hadn’t had many in our generation yet, but with the number of people falling in love, it was going to start happening more often. Lake’s cousins on her other side of the family were also procreating, and my cousins on my dad’s side of the family were working on it, too.

We weren’t all Montgomerys, even if it felt like it.

“I can’t believe you didn’t make Nick come to this,” I teased as I sipped my sparkling cider.

“Yes, because I can totally see my husband at a baby shower with cucumber sandwiches, fluffy cakes, and birth stories.” Lake rolled her eyes and took a bite of her cucumber sandwich. “Of course, that’s completely sexist of me, all the men were invited.”

“And yet they’re not here,” I said with a laugh.

“Of course, they aren’t. They’re off at that ax-throwing place, doing research to open up one of their own places while being manly men and talking about their feelings.” Brooke rolled her eyes as she sat down on the couch next to me.

“Really? That doesn’t sound like them.” I paused. “Okay. It sounds partially like them. But I thought they were more enlightened than that.”

“They are. Sometimes. And sometimes they revert. We let them, because then they give foot rubs and then we pretend we are dainty women that need a man to help us.”

Raven laughed from my other side. “Please, let me be there when we tell Sebastian I’m dainty and helpless.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “You know I don’t really see that happening.”

“You think you have it bad, I have two of them. Oh, they’re enlightened and totally know I can handle myself, but if I want to carry a heavy box into the house? Dear God, it’s the worst thing ever.”

“As I have two husbands just like you’re about to, I feel for you,” my Aunt Maya said to Greer with a laugh. “And it doesn’t get any easier. They just want to make sure the little lady is safe.”

“I don’t know how you do it, Greer. I mean, watching Lake handle Nick? That’s fun. Brooke with Leif? Amazing. Raven making sure Sebastian knows his place? Enlightening. But I couldn’t handle two.”

“Because anyone handling you would need to be made of strong stuff.
