CHAPTER SIXTEEN

It was nine p.m., Kaylie saw on the car’s clock. Even Palm Beach, on this weekday night, was winding down for the evening. The roads were quieter; the buzz in the restaurants was muted.

But Kaylie and Joshua were speeding along the road to where Walter Ashby lived, feeling as if they were on the way to a major breakthrough.

"It's the one thing I've been thinking we need in this case. Genuine emotional involvement. That's what I haven't been picking up enough yet," Kaylie said. "Whoever did this, I think they were most definitely feeling emotional. Perhaps it had been building up in their minds. I wasn’t sure if it was a parent or one of her lovers, but I was looking for that force of will. She wasn't expecting it, and they knew how to find her. They came in and saw her and that was it."

It seemed that in this pressured situation, their earlier conflict had smoothed over, because Joshua replied, "Yeah. I agree. Whoever did this had a serious issue. And we're looking for someone emotional."

Would Walter be their killer? The only thing that concerned Kaylie was the timeframe. He’d been involved with Leah a few years ago. So, if it was him, then something must have happened to trigger him all over again.

"Why did he kill now?" she asked aloud.

Joshua shrugged. "Maybe now was the time for him. Look, I'm no psychology expert. But in terms of the cases I've handled, I've seen that people can internalize things for a long time. But it's not really buried. It gets closer and closer to the surface and then suddenly, one day, like a bubble, it just erupts. That's it. Sometimes there can be something small that sort of damages the surface. Dents it. Gives that bubble a chance to burst. And sometimes there's nothing. You wouldn't know till it happens."

Kaylie tried not to look at him too curiously while he was speaking, but she couldn't help feeling intrigued by what he was saying. For someone relatively young, who didn’t have years of police experience behind him, she thought he'd picked up a lot. And for someone who wasn't a psychology student, he definitely had a good grasp of thought processes.

And in terms of triggers, he was bang on the money. Her own studies reflected that. They were mostly there, but sometimes they weren't. Sometimes, time itself was the only factor to blame. It was unpredictable, and could be a simmering pot, or a pressure cooker, or sometimes even a healer.

As she thought that, they pulled up outside Walter Ashby's house.

He was in his mid-twenties, and already he was the owner of a substantial home in a fashionable and trendy part of Palm Beach. Kaylie didn't know whether the work in the yard was his idea or a designer's, but either way the sculptures that were dotted around the treed yard, each subtly lit, were striking, and gave the home a strange, otherworldly feel.

She looked around, taking in the shapes that were crafted from metal and stone.
